In the United States, transportation departments are responsible for overseeing all modes of transportation in the country. This includes, but is not limited to, aviation, marine shipping, railroads and highways. The general term for these agencies is the Department of Transportation (DOT).
The DOT has a number of responsibilities that it carries out on behalf of the government including: - Regulating and managing surface transportation - Regulating and managing air travel - Administering federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and the Federal Aviation Administration Modernization Act. - Promoting the use of public transportation The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) coordinates a large number of state transportation departments in the United States.
It is an association made up of these departments that have particular responsibility for types of transportation such as highways,bridges,etc. In addition to them, AASHTO is responsible for developing standards that are implemented nationwide by its members.
